Don Roberts (Author)

Don Roberts began his formal education in a one-room country school and ended with a Ph.D. in History at the University of Pittsburgh. In between, he graduated from Slippery Rock State College and held teaching positions in Beaver Falls and Penn Hills, Pennsylvania.

His small village of Kennard did have a hollow behind it, just like fictional Whistler. Climbing up and down the steep slopes, splashing in the creek and swinging on grapevines were all part of fun-filled summer days. Like the fictional characters in Echoes from the Hollow, he played cowboys and Indians, listened to suspenseful radio stories and enjoyed country living in the 1950s. Kennard was crime-free, unlike Whistler.

A spirit of adventure drew him to Maracaibo, Venezuela where he taught two years at Escuela Bella Vista. It was there that he met and married Kay Delany. Finally, he settled in as a middle school teacher for more than thirty years in Pittsburgh’s inner-city. During that time, he was also a history lecturer at Pitt. He served as president and then executive director of the Pennsylvania Chapter of the National State Teachers of the Year. For ten summers, he served as a mentor at the Pennsylvania Governor’s School for Teaching and in alternate summers led People-to- People delegations to Europe, the Soviet Union, Russia, Australia and New Zealand. Wanderlust had and still has a strong hold on this country boy.

Don and his wife have a dog, DeeDee, and a cat, Boo. They all live happily in Monroeville, PA.
